SixOnSaturday

The population in our house was reduced slightly earlier this week when # 1 child was deposited back at university for his tertiary year . It will be trim back again tomorrow and by two more the follow Saturday as yet more student head off to the four corners of the country to a unusual covid - strike terminal figure . Not all the pupil are ours , I hasten to bestow , two are borrowed , nephew give up over for a few weeks on their way back into the UK . Anyhow , shortly be even less go on around here that might distract me from the garden ! In the meantime , it ’s Six on Saturday . Six things , in the garden , on a Saturday . Could be anything , you resolve . Join in !

Here are my Six for this calendar week …

1 – Leaping Echinops Seed . Caught in mid - flight , boot out itself explosively from this globe thistle seed head . A miracle of picture taking , swag - winning I ask . Or , the seminal fluid is stuck on a yarn of spider ’s web , and just looks like it ’s flying . Only you could decide the accuracy .

2 – “ When will there be a harvest time , for the woooorrrld ” . Erm , not probable , at least not from my plot this year . Beans have been extremely resistant on all fronts this yr . They did n’t want to sprout , then when they did they were rubbish plants , then when they grew well they did n’t produce . The funny run of conditions here , too hot then too wet then too dry , has not help . In recent days , however , things have commence to change . The runners are having a late blossom , the climbing beans are finally create , and the dwarf beans are giving up a small figure of beans despite frequent attacks by our slimy protagonist . Oh , and a courgette , well on its way to being a center . It was hiding beneath a whopper leaf .

3 – Eurybia divaricata , ashen woodwind instrument aster . Very happy in the shade , I now have a few clumps of this brightening up the darker corners of my garden . It flowers for calendar week at this prison term of twelvemonth , credibly taking me right on up to first freeze . It does flop about a bit , so in force to have it hem in by other plants , or some kind of support in blank space .

4 – Begonia grandis sinensis . I grew these from seeded player last yr , or peradventure the year before . They have been planted out since former summertime and have grown into quite large plants . Covered in tumid routine of white peak at the moment , I in reality grew them for the leaves , the underside of which are quite attractive . glad in partial tincture and ivory hardy too . Supposedly it drops bulbils freely which become Modern plants , so who knows , I may have a forest of it next twelvemonth . decent problem to have .

5 – Salvia ‘ Amistad ’ . Rather common these days , but still very middling . Only one of mine survived the winter in the reason , but the twelve or so cuttings I get hold of did well in the greenhouse and are now blossom with relish . Even the going away , the dark calyx , are rather pretty . I should get in and slew some of those spent staunch back , I might get some more blooms in before Jack Frost visits .

6 – Dahlia . Another steal leverage , this time bought as a tuber . I bought two , the other did n’t farm . I ’ve no approximation what variety this one is . To be good , I ’m not sure most dahlia agriculturalist live what variety a given tuber is , they seem to send quite random hooey out . Anyhow , it ’s quite pretty , ca n’t argue with that for £ 1 .
