1. ‘Montovano’ Fennel
Maturity:75 to 80 days
Yield : One bulb per foot
motive : Full sun to fond specter ; light , fertile soil
Bulb fennel was once an oddity at local James Leonard Farmer ’ markets , but its mild Pimpinella anisum flavor and its contribution to roast - vegetable dishes have made it a raw material on my husbandman ’ market table and a favorite of my CSA ( residential district - support Department of Agriculture ) client . The moderate summertime temperatures of the Puget Sound area leave a long windowpane of chance to grow this heat - sensitive crop . The mixed bag I choose is ‘ Montovano ’ . It consistently forms a large , circular bulb with a clean , bright bloodless appearance , and it has excellent flavor and crunch . It also seems to dissent bolting in the heat of late spring , when most other varieties go to seed .

2. ‘Tadorna’ Leek
Maturity:120 days
Yield:1 pound per understructure
Needs : Full sunlight ; abstemious , rich soil
The Northwest ’s maritime climate is well suited for winter gardening , thus a winter - hardy leek is a usual fixture in most people ’s gardens in this part . My favorite diverseness , ‘ Tadorna , ’ has a long clean shaft and carry better in the field than any other diverseness I have develop . Sometimes I ’ve been able to harvest Allium porrum all the means through winter and into March of the following year .

3. ‘Ventura’ Celery
Maturity:110 days
Yield : One bunch per 18 inches
Needs : Full Dominicus to partial shade ; fertile soil ; lots of urine
‘ Ventura ’ celery is deep green and flavorful . If grown well , it also is tender ; possesses a gravid , blanched sum ; and will prevail well into wintertime . Celery , in general , is one of the most difficult crop to grow well . I start with the practiced - lineament transplant I can grow and choose the good ground for planting . I fertilize and weewee frequently . This , along with our long summertime days , make for fantabulous Apium graveolens dulce .

4. ‘Shunkyo’ Radish
Maturity:32 days
payoff : One clump per substructure
‘ Shunkyo ’ radish is a stunning , vibrant pink with a unassailable , healthy top , and its smooth pelt clean up well . Though it tight became my favorite radish , I first grew ‘ Shunkyo ’ because it looked so near in the catalog . It more than holds its own , however , being more heat resistant than other varieties and having a complex flavour . It starts sweet and finishes with an intensity that can border on uncomfortable when grow in the heat of summer ; it ’s much milder in natural spring and fall .
