Roses and other favorite flowers
Hi GPODers ! This is Joseph , your GPOD editor in chief , and today I ’m endure to apportion a little bit of what is going on in my garden in Williamsburg , Virginia .
First up , somesweet peas(Lathyrusodoratus , yearly ) ! I ’ve been getting better at raise sweet peas since I learned that in Zone 7 , where I garden now , they do near when I plant the seeds in the fall . The plants germinate in the fall , overwinter as small plant , and burst into vigorous growth as soon as saltation go far . Then they bloom their head off until the real heat of summertime set in . In cold climates , they ’re well pop out in the former spring . However you produce them , they ’re incrediblecut flowerswith an iconically strong , angelical fragrance .
Oakleaf hydrangeas(Hydrangeaquercifolia , Zones 5–9 ) . This adorable bush is native to the southeastern United States with beautiful flower and leaf .

Ceanothus‘Gloire de Versailles ’ ( zone 5–9).Ceanothusgoes by the vulgar name of California lilac , because many of these blue - flower shrubs are aboriginal to the west coast of North America . Unfortunately , most of them are not very cold hardy and demand very ironical shape during the summertime . This variety is a loanblend between one of those beautiful but fussy species and a much audacious bloodless - flowered species native to easterly North America . The result is a very promiscuous - to - grow , hardy shrubwith big clouds of powder - aristocratical blush . The works is a second floppy , but I ’m hoping if I do some careful pruning I can get it to stand up better .
Daphnecneorum × arbuscula(Zones 5–7 ) . Alpine daphnes are thickset petty shrublet . When I moved from Michigan to Virginia , everyone told me they would n’t thrive in my raw climate . Many of them have n’t , but this little gem has been great . This is its 2d meter blooming this yr , and it ’ll put out a few more flush through the rest of the summer and fall too .
This is a hardy aloe — Aloearistata . I have heard that it can be stalwart in places as cold as Zone 5 ply it has perfect drainage through the winter . I ’m in Zone 7 , but it is a wet , showery Zone 7 , so I was n’t certain it would make it for me . But get into its third year , this plant life reckon great and is even flowering !

I love roses , particularly honest-to-god - fashioned fragrant roses , and this plant I bought under the name ‘ Erinnerung an Brod ’ checks all the boxes . alas , ‘ Erinnerung an Brod ’ is suppose to be a much moody color . I ’m not trusted what this rebel really is , but I do roll in the hay it !
Speaking of roses — this English rose ‘ Golden Celebration ’ is n’t from my garden , but one I saw on a sojourn toNorfolk Botanical Garden . implausibly beautiful , and fragrant to boot , it ’s going on my shopping list for sure .
