We ’ve been see this stuff for years : that plant grow better when we verbalise to them in a kind and encouraging manner .
Have a look at this 2018 Ikea ad that plays on this mind .
Yes , it ’s a heartwarming , anti - blustery message , but is that part about the two plants growing so differently true ?
lecture to flora is not strange . Many of us do this . Who has n’t asked impudently sown seeds to please grow ? Or flowers to blossom ? Or trees to fruit ? Whether done with humor or serious spirit , it ’s one affair to involve but quite another to assume it helps .
This ‘Proof’ Was a Publicity Event
In researching this clause , it was a bit of a surprise to see Penn State University share this quote : “ The Royal Horticultural Society really proved that talking to works take a shit them grow faster . ”
We look into this “ cogent evidence ” and it flex out it was from a promotional material issue that the RHS ran nearly 10 eld ago where they show different voice and played one each to various tomato plants .
They did this by putting phone around the plastic mass of tomato plant . They held auditions and had Charles Darwin ’s great - great - granddaughter indication from “ On the Origin of Species . ”
At the oddment of the month , they equate growth measure and declared that Sarah Darwin ’s plant grew the most and the rest had a slower rate of growth .
But this was just a publicity effect . The goal was to raise the profile of the RHS in a fun way and so they did .
As far as I can tell , no one in the 9 - plus years since this event has successfully replicated these finding under a more rigorous experimental design .
Fun , yes ? Factual , no .
Really, IKEA?
Going back to the IKEA advertising , while it may provide the find - good anti - blustery message they go for to scatter , we have no evidence to support it .
And does any rational someone really consider those spectacular results?Seems so !
As a houseplant grower , it seems clear that they either swapped out works to ( deceivingly ) illustrate their tip , or , there were significant difference of opinion in the actual physical care and uprise conditions ( light , water , humidity , temperature ) .
To be altogether cynical , there could have also put something in the soil of the bullied industrial plant to gradually kill it off .
But a sad , wilted works from some mean value words?No . Though it is suspect to intend of all the things plants would hear in our family if they could !
What About Carbon Dioxide?
Here ’s one last bid to confirm IKEA ’s idea .
Some have argued that you exhale carbon dioxide as you talk , and CO2 is safe for plants — that ’s on-key — so maybe the C02 assist .
Except , you exhale CO2 whether you ’re talk or not , so there would be C02 present no matter what . Plus , the industrial plant “ mind ” to sound recording anyways , so no extra human exhaling was involved .
So , meritless , IKEA , we ’re not believing you .
With unnumberable examples of how bullying hurts , do we really need to make this stuff up and mislead people about science in the summons ?
Perhaps if they had thrown in more humour it could deliver the great subject matter without perpetrating another garden myth .
It is n’t impossible that some industrial plant have a good reply to legal wave in a talking voice , but no one ’s ever show this .
Keep Talking to Yourself
Lack of grounds aside , if a casual conversation with your plants , a chipmunk , or freshly - flower flowers seems as natural and necessary to you as it does to me , your well - being is reason enough to keep it up .
