High altitude, late frosts, blinding wind, and lack of moisture … oh my!
Hi GPODers !
So far the composition of this week ’s compliance is garden peach despite challenging atmospheric condition ! Yesterday we saw how Fran ’s garden stays lush despite lots of deer activity , and today we ’re see Charlie , who garden in Wyoming despite a laundry tilt of obstruction .
Living in Wyoming can be quite the gardening challenge , especially when you ’ve started with nothing but red rock and a few aspens surrounding the property . We ’ve lived here four years .

The first affair we did was remove the rock , and then because I want an instantaneous garden I put seeds down the first year . They include bachelor ’s button(Centaureacyanus , annual ) , daisy , poppies , lupine , zinnias , baby ’s breath(Gypsophila paniculata , Zones 3–9 ) , phlox , and what I call Bouncing Betty .
Our big challenge here are the in high spirits height , late hoar , blinding winding , and lack of moisture . We receive less than 12 inch of rainwater each year , so we count on gravid snow in the winter to help . When we do n’t take in snow , many trees and perennial pass . This yr the paeony survived but did n’t salad days . However , we gardeners are the eternal optimist , are n’t we ? My favorite style of garden is hayfield - like , but I am learn to love more formal garden beds .
Charlie , does it take hours for node to make it up to your front room access ? ? I would be too tempted to barricade and admire all of these fab old maid .

Not heavy to see Charlie ’s love of hayfield gardens on showing . Bright blood-red poppy ( Papaverrhoeas , annual ) with unmarried man ’s clit ( Centaureacyanus , annual ) is a quintessential meadow garden pairing .
More of Charlie ’s classical meadow gardens .
Paper birch tree ( Betula papyrifera , Zones 2–7 ) is n’t as ordinarily found in hayfield gardens , but Charlie has create a conniption I think more gardeners should re-create . Not only dead appropriate for the harsh winters in Wyoming , the stark blanched bark establish a thoroughgoing companion and backdrop to the riot of colored flowers .

daisy , lupins , and dame ’s rocket ( Hesperismatronalis , Zones 3–8 ) all creating sensational combinations with those paper birch in the background . While Wyoming kick in Charlie plenitude of obstruction , there are small silver lining . While dame ’s skyrocket is fantastically invasive in many states , the extreme conditions intend it can be grown in Wyoming without much headache of it taking over .
As Charlie bring up , there is much more to their garden than just meadow plantings . Here , asmooth hydrangea(Hydrangea arborescens , Zones 3–8 ) is the perfect backdrop for this pretty pink clematis .
Charlie is also masterful at crafting containers . This window boxwood is absolutely bust with beautiful whiteverbena .

Lastly , a smaller but every bit fab window boxful plan have more daisies and moss roses ( Portulaca grandiflora , Zones 3–8 ) .
