Above:“Many years ago , landscape designer Bill Frederick say me that there are different types of garden , ” Darke says . “ Some are for consider — you’re meant to look up to them , but do n’t really go out into them . The type that appealed to me was the idea of a stroll garden . That ’s what we ’ve create here . We take the air double a day in our garden , and each time we experience something unlike . It ’s an extension of our house — we much live in it . ”

The stonework , local Pennsylvania bluestone , in this louche dapple of the garden “ is an invitation to the blank from where the photograph is being taken — there ’s a judiciary there and it ’s one of many destinations in the garden , ” says Rick Darke . Plants surrounding the pathway : woodland geranium ( Geranium maculatum ) , whitewood aster , pinkish root ( Spigelia ) , many ferns , and azaleas . Above : Though the path is not steep , there is just enough of a grad alteration for water to produce erosion over clip . “ When I redid this distance , I worked the solid ground to be certain the water would spill into the bed , ” Darke aver . “ To retard the stream of piddle and abridge the slope , I added the step . ”

Like most constituent in the garden , the workbench in this fleck has a story . “ Sometime in the fourscore , Longwood adjudicate to replace their whole oak tree benches in the fount bench because they were worn , ” Darke says . “ They made them uncommitted to employee for $ 2 , so I bought one . We got 20 years out of that work bench . When I make over this space , I establish a local crafter who had access to good ashen oak , and commission him to remake the workbench . He used the original bracket on the back of the Longwood work bench . This bench has a report . You ca n’t purchase it at Smith & Hawken . ”

An Amish carpenter built it by handwriting out of mostly locally sawn Sir Henry Joseph Wood . “ The porch is just abstruse enough for two people and perhaps a pawl , ” Darke says . “ It ’s the perfect bit to sit around and listen to the music of the pelting falling on the alloy roof . ”

Darke and Zoehrer constructed the fervor Mexican valium in front of the cabin with local Lucy Stone . “ A redbud tree blossom in the background . In the foreground to the right is a 120 - class - sure-enough Erie Railroad tie “ that I legally acquired , ” Darke says . “ When it get wet , the W darkens . The nontextual matter is made of original blowhole sash from Longwood ’s conservatory . “ When I was working at Longwood in the 90s , they were doing a renovation , and they replaced these outlet sashes ( made of hand - sheathed copper over old - growing cedar ) with untainted - blade vents . ” Darke and Zoehrer can see this from their bedroom . “ Throughout the day , the light patterns that the glass create change , ” Darke tell .
